One-of-a-Kind Ambiance, Noriega Hotel Bar Restaurant - Sunday with Friends & Family
Would you like to see Noriega’s Hotel become a Basque museum?
It was a historic Basque hotel and restaurant in Bakersfield, Calif. Everyone who went there loved it, loved the atmosphere there. It had a one-of-a-kind ambiance.

In 1872, a Spanish Basque immigrant, Faustino Noriega arrive to the United States from Santander, Spain to be a sheepherder. Later in 1893, he partnered with Fernando Etchevarry, a Basque immigrant, and they opened the "Iberia Hotel". It operated as a boardinghouse for most of its history.
Located at 525 Sumner St., Bakersfield, Calif., it was owned by the Elizalde family since 1931.The boardinghouse started as the Iberia Hotel in 1893, making it the oldest Basque boardinghouse-style restaurant in the West for many years.

It was located across the street from the Southern Pacific train depot, so it was easy to find by the newly arrived immigrants. It served young Basque men who came to the U.S. to work as sheepherders.
Eventually, boardinghouse owners realized there was money to be made in opening their dining rooms to the public. At Noriega’s and other Basque restaurants, dinner was served at a specific hour. Eventually, other restaurants changed their schedules to accommodate the clientele, but Noriega’s did not.
This was the charm of Noriega’s. Everyone waited in the bar area and socialized until it was time to sit down for dinner in the dining room.
In addition to providing food, on Sundays Noriega’s entertained the lunch crowd with trinqueta-style pilota or handball in the court adjacent to the dining room. One could watch the games from the table, although the best way to follow the games was from the wooden bleachers at the back of the court.
The historic Noriega’s unfortunately closed in 2020 during the pandemic. Read our story about Noriega's and why it closed. euskalkazeta.com/noriegas-hotel-in-bakersfield-closes-for-good/
The unique Basque people come from the region of northern Spain and southern France and speak the oldest language of Europe, which they call "Euskara."

Why is there Spanish music in the background?
Because Basque Country is in Spain.
@@sethsaviero9137 First off, Basque Country is in southwestern Europe straddling the border between France and the Kingdom of Spain. The Basque music is historically based on rural tools and instruments they carved out and used to communicate between them in ancient times in the Pyrenees mountains of Basqueland while Spanish music is mainly based on instruments that Moors and other African and Mediterranean tribes took to Hispania.
Get outta hear with that

Did you know there were Basque people in Louisiana? A well known name in creole cuisine is Basque. We are working on a video about this subject. Look for it later.

There are no words to describe the hole left in our hearts with the closing of our beloved Noriega Hotel. But there are the wonderful memories of the good times and great friends plus the incredible food that the Noriega provided. Animo! (cheers)
